Shifra Elman
Dean of Jewish Studies

Ms. Elman studied at Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women for their undergraduate degrees and Wurzweiler’s School of Social Work for their M.S.W. After a year volunteering with Americorps, she moved to the Bay Area to work for Hillel at Stanford. Innovations in Jewish life, practice, and thought have been at the forefront of their work and continue to be an essential part of their practice. Shifra is chiefly interested in studying the things that made it into the Jewish cannon along with some apocryphal works through various lenses such as feminism, historical context, literary criticism, poetic narrative and the like. Shifra is currently in a year-long fellowship with the Shalom Hartman Institute studying the relationship North American Jews have with Israel.
