Half the Sky – Community Discussion – Recap
The Half the Sky Community Discussion event on Thursday was a well-attended success. Mr Weaver showed clips from the film and we heard from 3 non-profit organizations about what they are doing to combat the issue of women and oppression worldwide. The subject matter was intense and everyone there was moved by the stories of women who can’t live a free life as we know it. One of the presenters answered the question about how can parents encourage their teens to get involved; by modeling the behavior, and talking about it with your family. Why you support certain organizations, what are ways you find rewarding to be involved, and which issues are important to you all will help our children see that there are efforts to be made in a variety of causes and that we can make a difference.
KPA sends a big thank you to Mr Weaver for his efforts to make the night an informative one, and to Brenda Boyle from Room to Read, Deb Matithayu (and her entourage!) from A Little 4 A Lot, and Eric Sahn from American Jewish World Service. If you are interested to continue the discussion about women and oppression and how to get involved, on January 11th at 5 pm the OFJCC is hosting Nicolas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn, the Half the Sky authors, to discuss their new book and film, A Path Appears. Esther Wojcicki will be moderating the discussion. For tickets and information, click here.
