Congratulations Rachel Berman! New York Times Editorial Cartoon Contest Winner
As an extra credit assignment in US History this fall, Ms. Ratledge encouraged students to submit an original cartoon to the New York Times’ 5th Annual Student Editorial Cartoon Contest. In December, Rachel Berman’s (’21) cartoon on Trump’s recent impeachment was chosen as a finalist out of hundreds of submissions from all over the country. On January 2nd the Times announced the winners and Rachel was one of them. Kol HaKavod!
If you’re not familiar with, The Learning Network, it’s a very cool resource. The New York Times offers up this substantial way to engage students and educators in current events in a way that promotes open discussions. Highlighting a variety of topics that might otherwise be difficult to navigate or fly under the radar for students. Having the contests is a great motivator for kids and gives teachers something to utilize as extra credit or as supplemental to the curriculum. Among The Learning Networks offerings are Lesson Plans, Teaching Resources, Articles & Questions, Writing Prompts, English Language Arts and Personal Narrative Essay Contests to get the wheels turning and the dialogue going. The honor of being featured in the NYT is a great motivator and a proud moment for those lucky enough to make the cut.
