Town Hall: Kehillah's Identity & Branding

On Sunday, September 15, 2024, a Town Hall was hosted by our Head of School Dr. Daisy Pellant, Associate Head of School Dr. Roy Danovitch, and Board Chair Jonathan Manson. During our Town Hall, Organizational Identity and Development Consultant Jamie Reichman presented the findings from her yearlong study of Kehillah.

Our New Logo

We have designed a new logo, inspired by a ram’s horn and the four blasts of the Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) shofar, symbolizing a call to unity and a new beginning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you to everyone who submitted questions. We received 90 questions from 11 parents, and due to some repetition, we have aggregated them into the following categories:

Branding and Name Change

Why was the decision made to change the school's name, and how will the new branding reflect Kehillah's identity and values moving forward?

Our goal is to clarify who we are and how we align with the Jewish values that shape every aspect of our program. The data considered by Kehillah’s Board and the decision itself are explained at length in the Webinar and the research report

It’s important to note that in a survey of NAIS high schools, we found that the other independent schools with Jewish in their names were only accepting students who identified as Jewish. Since 2010, Kehillah has been publicly open to all families. Our rebranding helps ensure that Kehillah is publicly understood to be accessible to all Jewish families and any family that aligns with our mission and values.

Will there be a trade-in program for old Kehillah apparel, and will parents be able to purchase items with the new branding?

Your old apparel is now vintage! While there won’t be a trade-in, new apparel will be available for purchase.

How will the new branding differentiate Kehillah from other private schools, like The Nueva School, while maintaining its unique identity?

The new branding emphasizes the word "kehillah" (Hebrew for community) which is distinctly Jewish and reflects our commitment to inclusivity, pluralism, and dialogue. Kehillah’s identity will remain focused on fostering a diverse, welcoming community grounded in Jewish values.

Jewish Identity and Practices

How will Kehillah ensure that Jewish traditions, values, and educational practices remain central to the school’s identity?

Jewish traditions, values, and educational practices are central to our program and will continue and deepen. The name change seeks to correct the misconception that Kehillah is a traditional Jewish Day School. Our goal is to clarify our inclusive approach while maintaining a robust Jewish experience for all students.

How will the school address concerns from students, alumni, and families about the name change?

It's natural to have a range of responses to a name change. We believe that with this clearer expression of our inclusive identity, we can better communicate the school’s purpose and mission. To ensure transparency in the process, we have shared the webinar and the full data report with the community and are open to answering any questions.

The pillars that make Kehillah strong—our blend of academic excellence, Jewish education, and inclusivity—will remain unchanged. It’s this strength and the richness of our community that give us confidence we will come together, despite the differing opinions on our name.

What Jewish holidays and traditions will continue to be observed, and will there be any changes to policies regarding homework and tests during these times?

We will continue to observe Jewish holidays, and our policies regarding Shabbat and holiday observances will remain the same. Additionally, we will continue to provide Jewish programming like Kabbalat Shabbat (“KabShab”) and siddur minyan.

How will the school ensure inclusivity for observant Jewish students regarding kosher food, Shabbat observance, and school events?

We will continue to serve kosher-style options, and offer Shabbat observance accommodations and full participation in school events and trips.

Israel

How does Kehillah foster a connection to Israel?

We look to foster a nuanced and personal understanding of Israel, grounded in principles of open dialogue, democratic values, and pluralism. Our approach encourages students to explore the multifaceted connections between Israel and Jewish heritage, recognizing its significance across history, liturgy, and culture. This connection also informs experiential programs, educational travel, and courses that address history, politics, current events, language, Israeli law, and more. For a full list of courses and programs, please consult our curriculum guide.

Enrollment and Diversity

What strategies are being implemented to increase enrollment, particularly among Jewish families?

We are engaging Jewish day schools and community leaders through events, visits, and targeted outreach. For example, we host full-day experiences for 8th graders from local Jewish schools and maintain active relationships with institutions like Yavneh, Hausner, and Wornick. Our rebranding efforts will further support these enrollment initiatives.

What data supports the belief that rebranding will positively impact enrollment and Jewish family engagement?

We paid critical attention to findings and recommendations from admission directors at feeder schools, along with enrollment trends from peer schools and the broader market. We also reviewed data which revealed that many families misunderstood Kehillah’s identity. We believe our rebranding clarifies our values, positions us more effectively in the marketplace, and helps us attract more mission-aligned families. Our Board of Trustees approached the mission and name change process through a strategic lens, with the school’s long term success and sustainability top of mind.

How will staff be prepared to address student concerns about these changes?

Faculty have been engaging with students as needed and are prepared to continue supporting them during this transition.

School Policies and Calendar

Will Kehillah’s calendar continue to align with Jewish holidays?

Yes, we will continue to observe major Jewish holidays, Israeli holidays, and Kabbalat Shabbat. No homework will be assigned or due during these observances.

Will field trips and school events continue to accommodate observant Jewish students’ needs, such as providing kosher meals and respecting Shabbat?

Yes.

What name will appear on my student’s transcript and diploma?

This is a transition year, so the class of 2025 will have the choice of either “Kehillah Jewish High School” or “The Kehillah School” on their diplomas. Transcripts will say “The Kehillah School”.

For students graduating in 2026 and beyond, both diplomas and transcripts will say “The Kehillah School”.

Can you share more about the Jewish Studies pathway in development?

We are currently developing a curricular pathway, proposed initially in 2021, focused on Jewish studies, civil discourse, and leadership. This concentration will require advanced research, service, coursework, and independent study, while leading to a special commendation on the diploma. Now that we are able to clearly communicate our welcoming, inclusive identity, we are excited to develop this opportunity for eligible students who are passionate about deepening their Jewish education.
